Guitar and Ukulele Lessons for All Levels

My name is Matt Krein and I am proud to own and operate the Milwaukie School of Guitar. As an instructor for over 15 years, I have helped well over a hundred students of all ages learn and embrace the joy of playing music.

While the last year was difficult and many had to scramble to adapt to a new format, I’ve been offering remote lessons for years and was well-equipped to offer the best experience possible with HD video and studio-quality audio. Even though the studio has reopened, many students have opted to continue learning online, and I'm happy to take on students from anywhere around the world. For more information on how online lessons work, see the FAQ.

Whether you want to be a "campfire" player and sing and strum, or want to learn to play your favorite rock solos, fingerstyle arrangements, or compose your own music, I can help.

I'm happy to offer a free 30-minute trial session to all interest new students to make sure I'm the right fit for them before committing to regular weekly lessons. If you have questions about how scheduling works, visit the Frequently Asked Questions page.

Testimonials

I take online lessons with Matt. He is a music theory genius and an excellent guitar player, and my guitar playing has come a long way since we first started. He's always on time and easy to communicate with. Highly recommended!” - Alec S.
Matt's guitar lessons make learning to play a complicated instrument fun... His patience with teaching my five year old son to play guitar is amazing, and I would recommend him to students of any age.” - Rachel C.
Matt is an excellent teacher. Patient but strong. I had no experience and he taught me to play with confidence in a very short time. I highly recommend him!” - Julie C.
He is an excellent teacher. My daughter is 8 and is learning how to play Ukulele. Obviously he's a very advanced player and teacher with lots of experience, but it doesn't stop him from teaching her at her pace. She loves it, and she is utterly shy. This guy's the bomb.” - Allison J.
Our daughter requested a ukulele and lessons for her 5th birthday. We feared that she was too young to start, but Matt welcomed her with age-appropriate content and instruction.” - Nadine G.
Matt is a great teacher. He is patient and has the ability to go wherever you want to go as a student. He also literally wrote the book on music theory for guitar! I would highly recommend taking lessons with Matt if you want to learn guitar.” - David B.

I recently retired, and on my bucket list was learning guitar. After shopping around a little, I began taking lessons from Matt K. at the Milwaukie School of Guitar. I was somewhat skeptical about my ability to succeed, having little to no ability. However, I found Matt to be an exceptional teacher. He is patient, skilled, and experienced. The pace has been just right, learning technique but also having fun and playing songs. I recommend Matt K. and the Milwaukie School of Guitar highly. Give it a shot!” - Doug M.
Matt's lessons are great! He gives a lot of helpful guidance, without applying too much pressure to do things exactly one way. I've taken guitar lessons with Matt as an adult. I've been casually learning guitar for years, but having lessons with Matt has opened my eye to theory and techniques that I couldn't learn just from looking up tabs online. There are lots of books and online resources out there, so it takes a great teacher to be worth while, and Matt is one of them.” - Brad F.
